History

In September of 2009, Donny Higgins was diagnosed with Colon Cancer at the young age of 36. During the months that followed, Donny fought to stay with his beautiful family as hard as anyone could possible fight. He was and will always be a wonderful power of example to us all. Unfortunately, he passed away in July of 2010. His friends were determined to find a way to continue Donny’s legacy in his hometown to keep his memory alive and to carry on his dedication and commitment to the South Boston Youth Sports Programs and other sports programs in other surrounding communities.

Several decades ago, the Commonwealth built two full size tennis courts behind the Murphy rink on Department of Conservation and Recreation property. The Higgins Family grew up across the street and Donny worked as a skate guard at the Murphy Rink. Our friend was instrumental in lobbying to transform one of the tennis courts into a street hockey rink so that the children of South Boston could play hockey during summer months while the rink was closed. Representative Nick Collins worked tirelessly with state legislators to sign into law, House Bill 4201, which officially designated the street hockey rink on Farragut Road, behind the Murphy Rink, as the Donald F. Higgins Memorial Street Hockey Arena. The dedication and rink opening ceremonies took place on June 13, 2015.

Our Mission

The Mission of the Friends of Donny Higgins Memorial Fund, Inc. is to maintain the Donald F. Higgins Memorial Street Hockey Arena and to promote and support youth sports programs in Greater Boston. Guiding us in our mission are our core values:

  • Focusing on the needs of youth sports programs due to lack of funding.
  • Operating with accountability and transparency.

Our Vision

In order to do this, we are focusing on four strategic priorities:

  • Strengthening our Partnerships with Community Leaders and Local Businesses to assess the needs of organized youth sports programs that lack funding.
  • Expanding our Reach to provide resources for sports programs that have cut back or eliminated some sports activities or adopted a pay-to-play model.
  • Building Strong Relationships with communities to provide access to youth sports programs. And, we will rely on strategic alliances with the organizations that have the knowledge and infrastructure to extend our reach.
  • Working in Collaboration with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) with the upkeep and maintenance of the Donald F. Higgins Memorial Street Hockey Arena.

Our Programs

We are accepting applications for the
First Annual Sergeant Daniel Bausemer Memorial Scholarship

Sergeant Daniel Bausemer

On October 25, 2018, Sgt. Dan Bausemer, a 14-year veteran of the Boston Police Department lost his battle with cancer. Just 45-years-old at the time of his passing, Dan was highly respected and extremely well liked by those who knew and worked with him.

Daniel Bausemer “Bozzy” was born and raised in South Boston. He attended Gate of Heaven School and participated in SBYH. He was a lifelong friend of Donny Higgins. They both shared similar values and will always be remembered as family men who cherished time with their wife and kids. They fought courageous battles with cancer and always maintained positive attitudes during their illnesses. Donny and Bozzy were the type of guys who were the first ones to help out and offer any assistance to their family, friends, coworkers and neighbors.

The Friends of Donny Higgins Memorial Fund committee would like to honor the life of their friend “Bozzy” and to continue his legacy of excellence, generosity and service. The scholarship is a merit-based competition that focuses on ambitious, driven and goal-oriented individuals with a consistent involvement in organized youth sports programs or community service.
